Biomedical waste

Patients who use injectable medications administered through needles, syringes or lancets

should dispose of them as follows:

  • Needles, syringes or lancets should be discarded in a sharp container provided by the

  • pharmacy. If one is not available, a rigid, puncture-resistant, screw-top container should be used. Examples of such containers include: gallons of water or detergent containers.

  • This container should be identified as NON-REUSABLE NEEDLES. Once the container is half full, cover it and notify the pharmacy for pick-up.

  • Needles, syringes or lancets MUST NOT be deposited in any household wastebasket.

  • They must be strictly deposited on the container prepared for this purpose. This container should be kept out of the reach of children and out of the kitchen.

  • Other related wastes, such as gauze or alcohol wipes, can be placed in a sealed bag and then placed in the normal household garbage can.
