COMPLICATIONS
Uveitis is a medical emergency that must be treated on time. Otherwise, serious eye complications could arise. Although some of them could be resolved, uveitis treatments are not exempt from also producing complications, some more severe than others.
DELAYED DIAGNOSIS AND TREATMENT
Uveitis that is not treated early may cause serious damage to the structures of the eye. Some of the complications could be: glaucoma, cataract, retinal detachment, optic nerve injury, macular edema or hypotonia. These complications could result in vision loss.
SIDE-EFFECTS OF TREATMENTS
Long-term use of corticosteroids could cause secondary glaucoma or cataract. However, these are considered less severe since they can be managed without causing major vision loss. On the other hand, some treatments may cause other complications to other body systems.
It is very important to seek medical assistance if you have any symptoms. Uveitis can be a cause of vision loss, but the prognosis of most cases is good. This will mainly depend on the type of uveitis, how soon it is diagnosed, the severity of the symptoms and the effectiveness of the treatment.
